Zehnder’s Chef Lance is ACF Chef of the Year

Jan 21, 2025

Each year, an outstanding culinarian is honored as the “Chef of the Year” at the Annual Awards Banquet of the ACF Flint Saginaw Valley Chapter. The awardee has demonstrated the highest standard of culinary skills, advanced the cuisine of our region and has given back to the profession through the development of students and apprentices. The professional chef, cook and baker members of the chapter vote for one of their own to receive this special honor.

This year, they selected one of Zehnder’s chefs, Lance Buchinger, Chef de Cuisine and Certified Sous Chef, as the recipient of the award. Chef Buchinger is a graduate of the Mott Community College Culinary Arts Program. He regularly competes in professional chef competitions and has won many culinary honors. Chef Buchinger also serves as the chapter’s Vice President. This is the second time that Chef Lance has been won ACF’s Chef of the Year Award, the first time was in 2018.

The American Culinary Federation is the professional chef, cook, baker and pastry chef organization with over 200 chapters nationwide. ACF Flint Saginaw Valley has twice been selected as “National Chapter of the Year”.

Born and raised in Reese, Michigan, Lance Buchinger is a seasoned culinary professional currently living and working in Frankenmuth, Michigan. With over 16 years of experience at the iconic Zehnder’s of Frankenmuth, Lance serves as Chef de Cuisine and Certified Sous Chef. He plays a pivotal role in managing the daily operations of the restaurant’s 1,500-seat dining facility, crafting custom menus for specialty events, and leading the Back of House team with precision and creativity.

Lance’s culinary journey began at Mott Community College, where he honed his skills and built a strong foundation for his craft. He further developed his expertise under the mentorship of John Zehnder, Zehnder’s former executive chef, whose guidance left a lasting impact on Lance’s approach to cooking.

Lance’s passion for food is deeply rooted in his family. He credits much of his inspiration to his parents and his 94-year-old grandmother, who still delights in cooking and baking. Their influence continues to fuel his dedication to creating memorable dining experiences.

Beyond Zehnder’s, Lance is a dynamic presence in the culinary community. He has served on the board of the American Culinary Federation (ACF), first as treasurer and currently as Vice President. He is also actively involved in a local private catering company that specializes in avant-garde menus, showcasing his creativity and versatility.

Lance’s commitment to local food extends to his involvement in Frankenmuth’s farmers market, where he has participated in thoughtfully curated dinners and initiatives to support local farmers and businesses. Through his work, he combines a passion for innovation with a respect for tradition, enriching his community and elevating the culinary arts.

With a career marked by dedication, leadership, and creativity, Lance Buchinger continues to make his mark as a culinary leader in Frankenmuth and beyond. Congratulations Chef Lance!
